Studying Humanity’s Search From the Clay to the Stars
I am a scholar specializing in interdisciplinary approaches to the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern Religions. I interlace archaeology, philology, and psychology with a digital humanities methodology to analyze how the ancients perceived the divine.
Archaeology
I utilize the material remains of cultic sites and figurines to understand how ancient people worshipped and what attributes they ascribed to their deities. Likewise, historical geography allows an analysis of how the worship of these deities overlaid the physical world.
Philology
I utilize philology to conduct textual analysis of ancient Near Eastern cultic texts and deity lists. Such texts often intertwine theology and history, thereby allowing one to study how humans saw the cult in their history and culture.
Psychology
I utilize the cognitive science of religion and cognitive archaeology to understand how and why worship of deities develops within human cultures and why certain deity attributions (e.g., the god of the storm, the god of the sea), develop in certain cultures but not others.
